I recently asked a successful retired lawyer for his advice on building a successful career. The following were his words, you have to have a passion, hard work that produces progress and doesn’t just make you spin your wheels in one spot, and after working hard you start hiring smart people to work with you. You treat your employees with respect and value them to keep a low turn over rate. You want to build a business that becomes the platform for smart people to join you on your journey.
How do you discover your passion? I would say you have to try a lot of different work before you find something that makes you want to keep working. I would recommend in your twenties to try to work for many different companies, try to run different businesses, to get the exposure and time to learn on what you are good at doing, where you can improve, or not do at all. When you are in your thirties you want to focus on the skills you are good at doing. Your thirties is what people describe as years of hard work on the skills you identify as your strength.
Hard work is required in order to achieve success. It’s not enough to just think you can make something happen sometime in the future but its important to actually be doing something that leads you to your dreams. It’s important to realize that there is no one that will work as hard as yourself. To make your business or startup successful, you should be the hardest working individual in the team and lead by example.
When your business grows and should be looking for additional help try to find other people you will enjoy working together. When you find someone that shares similar interests it would be easier to communicate and grow the business with them.
